Bonita Kye is a breath of fresh air, much like her namesake line, Kye Intimates. Simple, refined, and most importantly, wearable, it is no surprise you could describe Bonita’s style the same where you could describe her line of intimates. Here she tells us her trick to minimal dressing.

How would you describe your style in three words?
Fundamental, easy, undone

What is the most treasured piece in your wardrobe for sentimental reasons?
A gold chain necklace my mother gave me as a baby that miraculously still fits (just much shorter in length now).

What is the most worn piece of clothing in your wardrobe?
A simple boucle tank by Georgia ic25. The exposed seams and four straps allow for a multi-wear functionality—a forever favorite staple.

You dress with such ease and simplicity — do you have any tricks for people wanting to take their wardrobe to a minimalist place while still having a strong sense of style?
Consider interesting fabrication, silhouettes and details that compliment your body while still maintaining ease and comfort. That is key.

Tell us more about Kye Intimates and what spurred you to launch it? Where do you take inspiration for the designs?
After working in the fashion industry and being alarmed by the harmful production practices and disregard for the environment, and by the negative messaging about bodies in the industry, I wanted to create something tangible that would be a daily reminder of each individual and their beauty, starting from the garments closest to our bodies.

My friends will always be my main soundboard! I also look to design principles and the approach of architects and artists which greatly influence my design. Some of the Kye pieces are named after my favorites such as Donald Judd and Ludwig Mies van der Roh.
