Words of A Woman

I am my own muse, the subject I know best

– Oroma Elewa

*Editor’s Note: Originally, we accidentally attributed this quote to Frida Kahlo. We have since learned that Frida was not responsible for these words, and that they belong to Oroma Elewa. The quote has been widely misrepresented as Frida’s and we want to do our part to correct the narrative and redistribute their accreditation to Oroma. You can learn more here.

  • I think you are mistaken, artist Oroma Elewa wrote ‘I am my own muse, the subject that I know best, the subject I want to better’. This quote was misattributed and you should look into it.

    Hi Julia,
Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. We have updated the post with Oromoa’s photo and name to reflect her rightful ownership over this quote.

  • Hello,

I don’t know if you’re aware of that subject matter, but those words would not belong to the great Frida Kahlo, but to the no less great artist Oroma Elewa. At the present time, she’s fighting to see this quote return to her true issuer, with a lot of evidence to support her truth. You can see it on her Instagram (oroma.elewa) and Twitter account. I think it could be great to update this post, putting the name and photograph of its true issuer.

    Best regards,

    Hi Flo,
We were not aware of this! Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention. We have corrected the mistake and replaced the name and image to reflect Oromoa’s ownership of the quote.

  • Hi,

This quote is misattributed. This quote actually came from Oroma Elewa. See https://www.instagram.com/p/BvzIYdFj8pP/?hl=en.

Thank you so much for notifying us! We have corrected the misattribution and have restored credit to Oroma.
    xx Linne

  • Sometimes I keep my (best) sayings to myself because I hate it when people say/write/use my words after a few days like they are theirs. So I think this is a very good thing to correct this history! @fabiduister
