In Her Words: Being Black in South Africa Vs. the U.S.

With July 4th behind us, we’re continuing to dive deeper into the nuanced questions of freedom. The American fantasy of “freedom” is far from lived experience. Our dear friend (and AMAZING writer!), Magogodi oaMphela Makhene, offers us a view inside her own experience–having grown up in South Africa–witnessing the inconsistencies and hypocrisies within the stories that both South Africans and Americans tell about race.

C’est moi

I say “no” now. Sometimes I forget, though, and I have to go back and make up for it. And it took time for me to learn how to say it without suffocating and turning red (OK, that still happens sometimes, but I’m owning it), or turning my “no” into a little “yes” after one second.

On Freedom…

We chose “freedom” for July’s editorial theme at the beginning of the year (for the obvious reasons), but now, reading that word makes me sick to my stomach.

This week we celebrate our country’s freedom and independence, and yet we continuously deny that same deserved freedom to asylum seekers, immigrants, and refugees.
