For the Love of a Market Tote

5 months ago by

Photos Devin Doyle

I’ve never been shy about my love of a good market tote. One of my many feeble attempts at imitating the inimitable style of Jane Birkin is to wear mine all year round, regardless of weather, as she did in the 70s. If anything, being in quarantine has only reinforced this love because, well, the market is one of the few places I actually go these days.

Quarantine has not really improved my cooking or baking skills (the bread thing, despite some very sincere attempts, is not up my alley), but it has, by necessity, converted me into a more frequent grocery shopper. It’s also made me more of a minimalist. By wearing the same pieces again and again each day, with close to zero external pressure to dress up, I’ve focused-in on the items that are genuine and natural to me.

In my wardrobe, and on my trips to the store, a chic straw market tote will always make the cut.

  • I am lucky enough to live in the South of France and I my market tote is around 25 years old. I bought it in Provence. It’s really good quality, and I couldn’t live without it.
My mum recently gave me a mauve one mixed with decorated fabric pieces she bought in Brittany, it’s absolutely gorgeous and really trendy. I took it when I went the beach with my daughters and it proved to be very helpful. I just love it!
