Prada Plus One, Part 2: The Show

I can’t hold it in … we MET Madame Prada!

(Because if you’re in the know, then you KNOW, that that’s how you must refer to her… and well, we’re in the know).

Even with all that knowing going on, we didn’t actually know it was going to happen, and we definitely were not prepared for it – but there we were, mingling our way backstage to find ourselves just behind Sofia en route to a casual meet ‘n greet with THE one and only. I won’t lie, I couldn’t even look at Erik when I realized what we were in line for …

… I had a tiny panic attack inside (as one does when you’re thrown in front of a legend you save every cent for in hopes of just mayyyyybe purchasing something from their new collection) and then calmly introduced myself, told her how much I enjoyed the show, exchanged phone numbers to grab a coffee later and then kiss kiss ciao. JUST KIDDING. I don’t remember – I feel confident that I smiled and said some combination of Ciao! Hi! SO lovely to meet you!! followed by a swift exit to the left with an air of disillusionment. Erik thinks he introduced himself by name and mentioned Garance, but I don’t buy it.

ANYWAYS – the show was so very cool. I truly love menswear, so for me this was almost more special (and Erik too, because he loves men hahahaha) than seeing my first woman’s show in Milan. But really, the styling, very sailor-cum-romatic cast-away, once broken down, was a dreamy array of cropped and tuxedo-striped trousers that both man and woman could easily intermix into a wardrobe.

The hero of the show must be the beautifully drawn prints from artist Christope Chemin that covered the oversized and loosely worn shirtings. And I must mention what the Prada team calls “tricks”: the irregular accessories worn in the show, like the oversized keychains made of locks, massive antique-like keys and small books. Totally unrealistic, but completely necessary.

So there you have it, arrivederci Milano!!

  • Dear Brie:
First of all, Bravo! You & your colleagues at the Studio are doing a beautiful job. Its a pleasure to read this blog everyday. Garance is very lucky to have all of you as collaborators.

I hope you take what I am about to write as constructive criticism. For real. There is no other intention. Just trying to help make it even better.

As english is not my main language, I get confused a lot & look up for answers to my doubts. Lately the use of than & then has get a little mess up in my mind. So when I read the second sentence of your piece, my brain went again into a blur, as again I got confused.

Here is what I found: Than vs. then sourced from the

Then is mainly an adverb, often used to situate actions in time. For example, you wake up in the morning and then have breakfast. It’s also used in if … then constructions such as, “If you wake late, then you might have to skip breakfast.” It also works as a noun meaning that time (e.g., “I wanted breakfast, but then was not a good time”) and as an adjective meaning at that time (e.g., “My then boyfriend was not an early riser”).

Than is a conjunction used mainly in making comparisons—e.g., “My breakfast is better than yours”; “I make breakfast differently than you do.”

To help distinguish between the two words, remember that than has no one-word synonyms. It is a one-of-a-kind word. To illustrate, try thinking of a single word to replace than in “My breakfast is better than yours.” There isn’t one. Then, in contrast, has many synonyms and often bears replacement with an equivalent word or phrase. For instance, “I woke up and then had breakfast” can become “I woke up and subsequently had breakfast.” The exception is in if … then constructions, where the then is usually required. But for these situations, just remember that then, not than, is the correct spelling of the word often paired with if.

    Warm regards to all!

PS… If you or any of you at the Studio wish to escape the cold for at least a quick weekend getaway to sunny Puerto Rico, ¡Mi Casa es tu Casa!. Again, for real!

  • Settle down ladies. The grammar is correct. Then is about time, than is about comparison.
Thanks for the posts and great photos.
