Style Story / Jess Hannah Révész

I’ve admired Jess Hannah Révész as a designer for quite some time now. As someone who shops enthusiastically for timeless staples, her jewelry is right up my alley. When I finally met Jess in person, I wasn’t surprised at all to find that her personal style was perfectly aligned with her designs- chic, elegant and simple. Earlier this year we got a little preview of her world in LA.

What is your ideal uniform?

I start with some great pants, be that some Goldsign denim or Shaina Mote utility pants. Usually, I pair this with a simple t-shirt or a cashmere sweater that was likely inherited from my Grandpa. I haven’t been able to take off my Stacked Signet for the entire last year. It is a weighty piece and my pinky feels naked without it. I’ve also been wearing our Tetra Hoops daily. Jewelry lends itself to uniforms — we try to create staple pieces that integrate with anyone’s style, so you can wear the pieces every day.

Who or what influences your style?

I think style is very different from fashion.

Style is something undeniable, that is an innate aspect of someone’s identity. Style can be expressed through clothing choices, but it also lives alongside personality and perspective and is the undercurrent that surfaces in different ways.

Fashion means being honest about your personal taste and letting that be naturally expressed. Not being tied down by trends is central to this idea. We live in a world of fast fashion, and this culture works against us in so many ways. I think someone who is interested in fashion doesn’t buy very many things at a time, and saves up for more special pieces that they intend to keep forever.

I think about both style and fashion as less of something I get from outside influences, and more of something that I translate from within.

You have such a clear vision as a designer. What are you inspired by and how did you develop your eye?

I often have a natural reaction to visual stimuli, so what I like and don’t like is obvious to me and all I need to do is be honest with myself. It’s not always so clear though, I am known to agonize over our displays at popups or events. Sometimes the harder you try the further you get from the desired result. I think it’s all about patience, and always having your eyes open. Inspiration can come from any source, it doesn’t have to be visual either.

Does your work as a designer influence your personal style or vice versa? How are they similar and how are they different?

My personal style is imbued with influences not only from my own designs, but of the design community that I’m a part of. I definitely design pieces that I would want to wear, but when designing a collection I’m conscious of how that is a limiting factor, so that I can try to expand my design sense and push it further.

What is the most important to you, comfort, beauty or innovation?

Comfort.

What are you excited about in fashion right now?

Straight leg jeans! We went from the very skinny jeans to the wide leg pants and right now I’m excited to wear something more straight up and classic. The shape is giving new life to shoes I haven’t been wearing as much, which I am thankful for.

How is your style influenced by living in LA?

I like breezy fabrics and light neutral palettes. I wonder if my style influenced my decision to live in LA more than vice versa!
