Calvin Klein’s new chief creative officer Raf Simons tapped the art world in his first ad campaign for the brand. “American Classics,” a series of photos by Willy Vanderperre, juxtaposes Calvin Klein’s iconic underwear and jeans alongside artworks by well-known contemporary American artists, Andy Warhol, Sterling Ruby, Richard Prince and Dan Flavin.
The campaign hints at Calvin Klein’s role in defining American fashion like these artists defined their respective parts of the american art world. This isn’t the first time the brand has referenced contemporary art, they installed a Dan Flavin work in their Madison Avenue Flagship for their holiday windows. This is a collaboration that would probably make my college art history professors grumpy, but nonetheless visually interesting and a cool example of creative worlds colliding.
