I know, I know, you’ve probably become jaded to the array of superfoods (that don’t instantly turn you into a superheroine?) that have in recent years sprouted in the health and beauty markets, BUUUUT moringa is the super-crop that really is all that and a sustainable bag of chips.
Kwami Williams is the Ghana-native aerospace engineer revolutionizing the natural beauty industry with a mission to end malnutrition with his brand True Moringa. Moringa is the tree the brand has dubbed ‘Nature’s Miracle Tree,’ as they are able to take advantage of its every component in the process of making their products. The tree’s seeds are rich in antioxidants and unique moisturizing agents, which are used to make moringa oil, the key ingredient in the brand’s beauty line. The tree’s leaves contain nutrients no other superfood can compete with, so in efforts to forge healthier and stronger communities, the company is encouraging the farming families to incorporate it into their daily diets.
Williams encountered the super-crop moringa while on a trip back to his homeland alongside fellow MIT students and co-founder Emily Cunningham. This launched them on an entrepreneurial journey that resulted in MoringaConnect, which aims to eradicate rural poverty through their clean beauty brand.
Apart from supporting sustainable farming in Ghana by working directly with farmers and paying them a fair wage, True Moringa runs initiatives like One Million Trees where they planted one million moringa trees in Ghana in 2017.
Williams is using what mama nature gave his native land to give back to her and to everyone else, in more ways than one. While you shouldn’t hold your breath for the superfood that will turn you into a superheroine, although I’ll be waiting (let a girl dream, ok?) these products are definitely an incredible–and realistic, alternative.
